Roof Deck
Goal:
To complement a small penthouse apartment, the owners asked KATZ to convert an unfinished roof space into an outdoor extension of their home.
Process:
Visually connecting the interior and exterior, KATZ removed a section of brick wall and added two large sliding glass doors. Mitigating a slope, the mahogany and travertine deck surface was floated on pedestals, allowing water to drain below. The landscaping plan, which has filled out over time, defines spaces and creates privacy and selective views. Lighting creates nighttime ambience with small spotlights placed inside planters to illuminate flowering trees and floodlights on the roof above to dramatically light the building’s water tower.
Result:
With a pleasant garden and open views of the city, the clients now have a wonderful variety of spaces for lingering summer meals, entertaining, sunbathing, gardening, and relaxing.
Moral:
Always be open to outside influences.
