Interior Renovation
Goal:
When the apartment adjacent to theirs became available, a couple took advantage of the opportunity to expand; they sought kid space for two young children, accommodations for more-than-occasional houseguests, and their own oasis.
Process:
Negotiating the line between the owner’s two distinct visions — one rustic Mediterranean, the other sleek and modern — KATZ developed a simple layout and utilized materials with visual texture. In the master suite this became floor-to-ceiling bamboo panels in the dressing room and luxurious finishes such as iridescent glass tile with porcelain slabs in the bathroom. Adding a central hallway and adapting an existing spiral stair with translucent glass risers for safety, the apartment became more open. With the addition of kids’ bedrooms, KATZ took the opportunity to play with details, such as colorful ceramic tiles and magnetic walls.
Result:
Everyone — clients, kids and out-of-town guests— feels right at home.
Moral:
A happy houseguest is a better baby sitter.
