Lake House
Goal:
KATZ was asked to detail a weekend home on a lakeside slope in the Berkshire Mountains for energy efficient year-round use.
Process:
Deceptively small in scale from the entry, the home employed traditional vernacular wood construction details for economy and simplicity. Designed with a double-height great room, its more luxurious features include a cathedral ceiling, stone fireplace and winding stair to an upper level. Taking advantage of the lake views, the house was oriented towards the back of the site where a large screened in veranda opened towards the water.
Result:
The house fits comfortably within the sloping site, turning the difficult terrain into an advantage. KATZ’s simple, appropriate detailing successfully addressed the need for energy efficiency and budgetary restraint.
Moral:
Always take time to enjoy the view.
