Parlor Floor Renovation
Goal:
Ready to sell her traditional apartment, the client wanted to restore pre-war details, open up the space, and create impact.
Process:
Since the apartment had been poorly redone 15 years prior, certain changes were no-brainers from the start such as taking out the black tub and sink in the bathroom, and removing the swoopy black lacquered kitchen cabinets, the dropped ceilings, and the textured slate tile. To completely alter the dark, cave-like feel, KATZ restored original ceiling heights and expanded the entryway to correct the awkward circulation.
Result:
The completed space felt so grand, modern and fitting for the apartment’s history that the client almost decided not to sell. Not only did she enjoy the renovation process, but she fell in love with the dramatic entry hallway that led to the kitchen and its marble floors, high ceilings and suspended globe lights. However, the apartment sold almost immediately for much more than any other apartment of the same size in the building. Despite the profit, she still has a tinge of regret.
Moral:
Don’t get emotionally attached if you plan on leaving.
