Planning Disasters

The construction process can be messy, but that doesn't mean the experience has to be a mess.

Unfortunately, some people have to learn the hard way that you can't just improvise on a construction site.

Fortunately for us, there are pictures...

Katz Architecture will walk you through the approvals and construction process that can often appear daunting, occasionally approaching Kafka-esque. From handling the permit process, to dealing with prickly co-op boards, we have the experience, and the knowledge, to keep your project from becoming just another online laughing stock.

The planning process is crucial to any renovation or construction project. Take a look at one of our recent renovations where the right preparation -- especially in dealing with the Landmarks Commission -- proved essential

Give us a call when you're ready to build the right way.

Contemplating Construction in a Co-op or Condo in NYC? Read this.

We often get questions from people considering renovation projects. If you are contemplating construction, it is always a good idea to understand the steps required before the demolition crew arrives with sledgehammers swinging.

In addition to the design work to be carried out, as well as the projected costs and schedule, it is important to be aware of the approvals process. Depending on the authorities with jurisdiction, this part of the process can consume a lot of time.

In NYC co-ops and condo buildings the process can be particularly complicated due to requirements imposed by the NYC Building Department and Landmark Preservation Commission. In addition, within the last few months many co-op and condo boards have begun imposing much more stringent requirements about how work is to be carried out. This is an important consideration, particularly in light of the fact that most Co-op and Condo Boards require a sizeable deposit that is only returned after the project is completed to their satisfaction.

  • As an Owner's Rep and Architect, David has guided us at the Stephan Weiss Studio through a number of complex code, zoning and construction projects. He and his team have been a valuable resource.

David Bressman \ Executive Vice President and General Counsel \ Urban Zen, LLC
  • David and his team did a great job coordinating with the other members of our construction and design team. He really took charge of the construction process and pushed it to a great conclusion on a fast timetable. We definitely would use him again.

  • We were thrilled with David and his entire team's performance and skill in our store buildout. The "Katz Team" saw our project through from inception to completion... and were able to constantly arrive at creative and thoughtful solutions.

  • David has a good eye and creative ideas that really worked well for our space.  He was always fair, easy to work with, and always kept our budget in mind.  When it came time to start the work, he arranged for an excellent contractor who completed the work on time and with great workmanship.
